Devices: EV Charger

An EV home charger is a device that allows you to charge your electric vehicle (EV) at home. It works similarly to charging your smartphone or laptop, but it’s designed for your car.

An EV home charger is usually installed in your garage or outside your home. It’s hardwired to your electrical system and allows you to plug your EV in to recharge its battery.

Types of Charger

There are mainly two types of chargers:

  • Level 1 Charger: This is the simplest form and uses a regular electrical outlet with 230 V (like the ones you use for most household appliances). It doesn’t require any additional electrical installations, but it also charges your car very slowly, usually adding about 5 to 10 km of range per hour.
  • Level 2 Charger: This is faster and requires a dedicated single phase 230-volt connection or a three-phase 400VAC connection. It usually requires dedicated electric wiring with a dedicated Charging Wallbox. With this you can charge your EV much quicker—typically adding 50-100 km of range per hour, depending on the car and charger.

One of the biggest advantages of electric cars over fossil cars is that they can be simply charged at home or work instead of going to the gas station. The typical assumed user behavior is to plug-in the car daily or a few times a week at home, maybe after returning home from work, and let it charge. But given that the car is parked for a long time next to the charger, different charging patterns than the default immediate topup can have various benefits. This is where My.SunRoof helps you to optimize your energy usage and costs through smart charging
